Opening up to someone can be scary. Talking about what you’re dealing with is often hard and a little daunting, but at Teen Line we do everything we can to make it as easy as possible for you. Our only goal is to help you in whatever way we can.

What to expect when you call or text Teen Line:

When you call or text Teen Line, another teen will be there to listen, understand, and answer your questions. Many of our callers are talking to someone about what they’re going through for the first time. Our teen listeners are aware of that and try to make you as comfortable as possible.

 

When you call or text Teen Line, we won’t judge you or tell you what to do. We will listen to you and work with you to find a way to improve your situation.

Who is Going to Answer my Call or Text?

Our volunteers, who are high school students from Los Angeles, California, will answer your call. Our volunteers - who we call “Listeners” - receive over 100 hours of training from mental health professionals and key partners so that they can respond, understand and anticipate the needs of the teens reaching out.

What Topics Can I discuss With You?

Our Listeners are ready to talk about anything you are going through. The most common topics teens reach out about are relationships, anxiety, depression, suicidal feelings and loneliness.   

Is it really anonymous?

The great majority of our calls and texts are completely anonymous. For example, we would never tell anyone about your sexuality or gender identity. We will ask you a few statistical questions at the beginning of your call or text to help us know how teens are hearing about us and in what areas. If you are in danger of hurting yourself or someone is hurting you, we may need to involve others.* 

What if I’m not ready to call or text?

We understand how hard it can be to reach out! If you’re not ready, but still need some support, we can check out our message boards or resource pages where you might find answers to some of your questions. 

What if you are not available?

If you have an emergency please call 911 or go to your nearest hospital. If you are feeling suicidal and need to speak to someone right away, please call the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988. If you need us after our hours of operation, you can always send us an email and we will answer you as soon as we can. For additional resources, please visit our Resources page.

*In case Teen Line needs to involve outside parties in a client's case, this outside help is never monetary in nature. Teen Line does not generate revenue when partnering with medical, government, or legal help to meet our client's needs

Do You Want to Become a Teen Listener? 

Our teen volunteers make our work possible. By becoming a Teen Listener, you can support other teens and receive training in topics including crisis intervention, suicide prevention, cultural diversity, sexuality and gender identity, child abuse, and other self-destructive behaviors.
